5th June – 29th July 2023
Two households, both alike in dignity. In a deeply divided Belfast, where we lay our scene.
A brand-new adaptation, set on the streets of Northern Ireland’s capital in 1998, the year that the Good Friday agreement was signed. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, a pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives.
Led with movement and live music, this is a high paced, modern take on a timeless classic, showing us that Shakespeare is as relevant today as it’s always been and that a fragile peace is only as durable as opposing sides permit.
A brand new re-telling of one of history’s greatest love stories, that of Juliet and her Romeo, marking OVO’s 20th anniversary as we revisit the very first play we produced back in 2003.
This production can also be seen Polesden Lacey, Surrey, from 8th – 9th July 2023.
We are offering schools matinees of this production. Please contact us for more details.

★★★★★ LondonTheatre1
On Steph Allison and Amy Connery's Little Women
“Whether it’s your first experience of Shakespeare, or you’ve seen many adaptations, with Romeo and Juliet, OVO gifts us the perfect way to access Shakespeare, with an imaginative and modern telling of a traditional tale.”
★★★★ West End Best Friend
“It’s a strong cast of twelve, including three musicians, playing a text which has been very neatly adapted so that lines are often re-assigned. ”
Sardines Magazine
“This is a fine production for a summer’s evening. The use of popular music with adapted lyrics to illustrate the text works well.”
Spy In The Stalls
“Everyone in the cast as well as the live band give their all to make Romeo and Juliet a fitting start to the new season at the Roman Theatre in Verulamium and a reminder of how far OVO has come in the past 20 years.”
Herts Advertiser
“Once again OVO have proved that they can re-imagine an old favourite in an exciting and engaging way.”
St Albans Times
“Stylised balletic fights and choreographed group scenes connote tension, joy, fear or death and the music works well with those.”
